Karachi to see temperature drop from December 8 due to northwesterly winds: PMD

Chief meteorologist says cold conditions in Balochistan caused by western system may have slight impact on Karachi

KARACHI:

Karachi is expected to experience slightly colder weather from December 8 due to northwesterly winds affecting the city, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said on Saturday.

According to the PMD, a western weather system currently influencing northern Pakistan and Balochistan is expected to lower Karachi’s temperatures by 1–2 degrees Celsius from Monday.

Chief Meteorologist of Karachi stated that the cold conditions in Balochistan caused by the western system may have a slight impact on Karachi’s weather. Northeasterly winds from the Balochistan region are likely to increase the chill in the city.

However, meteorologists said that a severe cold wave is not expected in Karachi until mid-December. The minimum temperature is likely to range between 12°C and 14°C, while the maximum may vary from 27°C to 29°C.

The PMD added that there is currently no forecast of rainfall in Karachi despite the entry of western weather systems into the country.

Earlier on Wednesday, Karachi experienced colder temperature as strong chilly winds swept across the city throughout the day, while the Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted more chilly days ahead, with temperatures expected to drop to 10°C.

According to the PMD, the lowest temperature was recorded at Jinnah Terminal, where it dropped to 8.9°C. In Bin Qasim, the minimum temperature was 12.1°C, while the Old Airport station recorded 12.5°C. At Shahrae Faisal and Maripur (Air Force weather station), the minimum temperature stood at 13.5°C.

The Early Warning Centre has forecast that these chilly winds are likely to reduce the city’s temperature by one to two degrees Celsius. On Wednesday, the city recorded a minimum of 8.9°C and a maximum of 28.4°C. PMD said winds originating from the northeastern direction of Balochistan reached a maximum speed of 25 kilometres per hour.
