Pride grows at zoo withbirth of three lion cubs

City mayor celebrates 'one of the happiest moments' for Karachi Zoo

KARACHI:

Three healthy cubs were born to a lioness at Karachi Zoo, marking a celebratory moment for the facility which has of late drawn considerable flak for alleged lack of facilities and improper treatment of animals there.

According to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), the cubs were born on November 16 and their arrival has sparked renewed enthusiasm among zoo staff and wildlife enthusiasts.

The cubs were examined by the zoo's veterinary team, which confirmed that all three were in excellent health — active, feeding well, and showing strong early developmental signs. Their mother is also reported to be healthy and is receiving round-the-clock care from the staff.

City Mayor Murtaza Wahab directed the zoo administration to ensure enhanced care, strict monitoring, and a comprehensive treatment plan for the newborns. He stressed the need for proper nutrition, security measures, and continued veterinary oversight for both the cubs and their mother during these crucial early weeks.

"This is one of the happiest moments for Karachi Zoo and a testament to the improved standards of animal welfare under KMC," the mayor said, adding that the cubs' birth reflects strengthened habitat management, better veterinary services, and improved conservation practices at the zoo. According to the KMC administration, the birth of the cubs is not only a source of pride for the city but also an indicator of ongoing reforms aimed at uplifting the zoo's wildlife facilities.
