Journalist Olivia Nuzzi is returning to public attention with revelations from her upcoming memoir American Canto, in which she describes a prolonged digital relationship with U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The Independent reports that Nuzzi claims Kennedy encouraged her to have his child and disclosed his use of psychedelic substances, despite publicly identifying as sober.

The memoir, due for release next month, recounts what she characterizes as an intense but largely virtual affair that began during Kennedy’s 2024 presidential run.

According to interviews Nuzzi gave to The New York Times, her connection with Kennedy contributed to major personal and professional consequences. She was dismissed from her role at New York magazine, and her engagement to journalist Ryan Lizza fell apart. Afterward, she filed for a protective order against Lizza, accusing him of harassment and threatening to expose details of the relationship. Nuzzi then spent nearly a year in seclusion in Malibu writing the book.

Although she does not explicitly name Kennedy in the memoir, the context makes him identifiable. Nuzzi writes that Kennedy, who is married to actress Cheryl Hines, expressed love for her, wrote poems, and suggested he would “take a bullet” for her.

She also alleges that Kennedy admitted to using DMT and psychedelics while she disclosed taking Adderall. The Times notes her descriptions included personal moments, such as watching him floss, and referenced his travel kit filled with prescription medications.

Nuzzi told the Times she has not communicated with Kennedy for a year. When news of the affair surfaced in 2024, Kennedy downplayed the connection, claiming he had met her only once for a critical interview. Nuzzi acknowledges that others may dispute her narrative, saying her book is not intended to prove anything conclusively. When asked if she retained text messages with Kennedy, she declined to elaborate.
