Hytale revived as Hypixel buys back cancelled game from Riot; early access set for November

Hypixel reacquires Hytale from Riot Games and plans early access, promising a decade of community-driven updates

Hytale, the long-running Minecraft-style sandbox game, has officially been revived after Hypixel acquired full ownership from Riot Games. Riot had cancelled the project and begun winding down Hypixel Studios on June 23 2025, following a decade of development.

The revival came after significant community reaction, prompting Hypixel founders Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette to make an offer to repurchase the game. The team confirmed the deal was completed without knowing the full state of the codebase. Hytale is now fully independent, with no investors or publishers involved.

Hypixel has rehired over 30 former Hytale developers and committed personal funding to support development for the next decade.

An early access release is expected in November, with the team advising players to anticipate a raw and unfinished version of the game, including bugs, unbalanced content, and frequent updates that may temporarily break systems.

Simon Collins-Laflamme shared the news on X, stating: “We did it. Hytale is saved. We have acquired Hytale from Riot Games.” He added that there will be “no more waiting” and players can experience the game with “rough edges and all.”

Collins-Laflamme also emphasised community involvement, saying, “It won’t be perfect on day one. My hope is that together, we’ll shape it into something truly special.”

Hypixel plans to run a multi-year early access cycle, guided heavily by community feedback. The studio described its team as intentionally small to ensure fast iteration, with frequent updates and transparent patch notes.

The company’s goal is to deliver the long-promised Hytale experience gradually, building the game piece by piece with secured funding for the next decade.
