Director Ruben Fleischer opened up about the making of Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the third installment of Lionsgate’s popular magic-heist franchise, highlighting cast surprises, the use of AI-inspired illusions, and plans for a fourth film.

Fleischer, known for Venom and Zombieland, took over the franchise after the first two films, guiding returning stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, and Isla Fisher alongside new cast members Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa, and Ariana Greenblatt.

Fleischer emphasized the importance of audience engagement, recalling a gasping reaction at the first screening to the film’s third-act twist. He also addressed misconceptions about commercial films, noting that critics often misjudge the intent and fun these movies aim to deliver. “A movie should be judged by the execution of its intent,” he said, underlining his focus on entertainment value.

While the film nods to futuristic technology, Fleischer confirmed that no AI was used to create illusions. Holograms of the Horsemen were achieved through green screen compositing rather than artificial intelligence, though the characters’ in-universe magic incorporates AI-like elements. This approach maintains the series’ practical magic aesthetic while giving a modern edge.

Fleischer also revealed behind-the-scenes surprises, including cameo appearances and the careful handling of character returns, such as Lizzy Caplan’s brief but impactful role. He teased that Lionsgate is moving forward with part four, with a script already in development.

With exotic locations, elevated sleight-of-hand, and a blend of returning and new stars, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t aims to keep audiences enthralled while balancing traditional magic with AI-inspired visual flourishes.
