KARACHI:

The city traffic police have issued a total of 48,211 electronic challans over a 14-day period from October 27 to November 9 for various traffic violations.

The majority, 31,555 challans, were issued for not wearing seat belts, while 8,431 drivers were penalised for failing to wear helmets.

Overspeeding accounted for 2,304 challans, red light violations for 2,009, and using mobile phones while driving led to 1,263 challans.

Other offenses included tinted windows, fancy number plates, wrong-way driving, carrying passengers on rooftops, no-parking, stop line violations, overloading, lane violations, and one-way street violations.

The traffic police spokesperson said no e-challans have been issued yet for non-payment of vehicle taxes.

During the first round of e-challans, 4,800 citizens visited traffic police facilitation centres, with more than 90 per cent of their challans waived.
