Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum faced an unsettling incident on Tuesday while engaging with citizens in the historic downtown area of Mexico City.

A video circulating widely on social media shows a man approaching the president from behind and touching her inappropriately during her interaction with the crowd.

In the footage, the man, who appeared to be intoxicated, leaned in and placed his hands on Sheinbaum’s body, even appearing to attempt a kiss.

Sheinbaum is seen gently pushing his hands away while maintaining a calm demeanor and telling him, “Don’t worry.” Security personnel intervened shortly after to remove the individual from the vicinity.

The president’s office has not immediately responded to requests for comment regarding the incident. No injuries were reported, and Sheinbaum continued with her public engagement after the interruption.

Sheinbaum, who frequently interacts directly with citizens, has followed a practice similar to her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, of participating in street events, handshakes, and public appearances without heavy barriers.

This approach, while popular with supporters, raises ongoing questions about security protocols for high-profile public officials, particularly amid concerns over political violence in the country.

The incident occurred during a week when Sheinbaum was addressing public safety and political violence following the recent assassination of a mayor in Michoacán. On the same day, she met with the mayor’s widow to discuss ongoing security challenges in the region.

Social media users quickly shared the video, generating widespread discussion about the risks faced by public officials, the president’s composure in handling the situation, and the broader issues of harassment and safety in public spaces.
