RAWALPINDI:

A burglary reported in the Westridge precinct of Rawalpindi took a dramatic turn on Tuesday after the complainant's own cousin was identified as the culprit. Police have now placed the suspect under arrest.

According to officials, Mudasir Mahmood lodged a complaint two months ago stating that, upon returning home, he discovered Rs325,000 in cash, 1,350 Saudi riyals and more than eleven-and-a-half tolas of gold jewellery missing. He initially suspected the household maid.

A case was registered and the maid was quizzed, but no evidence was found against her. The investigation nevertheless continued.

As the inquiry progressed, police broadened their focus to include close relatives of the complainant. During this process, suspicion fell upon Yasir Zia, Mahmood's cousin, after officers observed a sudden and unexplained change in his lifestyle and financial behaviour. He was formally brought into the investigation, which was subsequently expanded — ultimately confirming his role in the crime. Police arrested him and, according to officials, recovered Rs3m in cash generated from the sale of the stolen gold and foreign currency, along with gold jewellery valued at over Rs1m.
