CM orders stipend for prayer leaders

LAHORE:

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed the authorities concerned to introduce a monthly stipend for the imams of 65,000 mosques across the province.

She said while presiding over a meeting on law and order that the prayer leaders are highly respected members of the society and it is inappropriate for local communities to collect donations to pay them.

She noted, "Punjab government will take responsibility for providing financial support to mosque imams to ensure their dignity and welfare."

The chief minister was informed that projects for construction and renovation of mosques had been included in the Annual Development Programme (ADP).

She issued directives that the projects should be completed at the earliest and all necessary measures must be taken to maintain the sanctity and proper upkeep of mosques across Punjab.

Officials said all roads leading to Raiwind had been repaired and resurfaced ahead of the annual Tablighi congregation. A special bus service will be operated to facilitate the visitors amid foolproof security arrangements.

The chief minister directed the deputy and assistant commissioners to visit the prayer leaders in their areas to strengthen community engagement.

It was also decided in the meeting that a Cybercrime Cell will be established in Punjab to curb the misuse of digital platforms.

The chief minister ordered strict enforcement of laws against illegal use of loudspeakers.

The authorities concerned informed Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during a briefing that Friday and daily prayers are being offered peacefully across Punjab.

She stated, "Mosques are houses of Allah and it is a duty of every Muslim to maintain their sanctity."

She also stressed that every responsible citizen must report any attempt to use mosques for subversive activities.
