LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday sought a detailed response from the Punjab government and other relevant departments on a petition demanding urgent action against the growing menace of stray and rabid dogs across the province.

Justice Khalid Ishaq, who heard the case, adjourned further proceedings until November 3.

The petition was filed by Dr. Salman Kazmi, Secretary of the Young Doctors Association (YDA), through his counsel Advocate Azhar Siddique. The petitioner contended that incidents of dog attacks on citizens have sharply risen in recent months, posing a grave threat to public safety.

He further submitted that several victims of dog bites had lost their lives due to the unavailability of anti-rabies vaccines in hospitals.

Advocate Siddique urged the court to direct the provincial authorities to launch an immediate and effective campaign to control the population of stray dogs. He also requested that the government's Animal Birth Control Policy be suspended, calling it inadequate in addressing the crisis.

After hearing the arguments, the court issued notices to the Punjab government and other departments concerned to file their responses and ensure that practical measures are being taken to protect citizens from dog attacks.
