The menace of extortion appears to have returned to haunt the financial hub of the country. As many as 118 extortion-related complaints have been reported in the metropolis so far this year, according to a report submitted to the provincial police chief.
Of the 118 complaint, only 44 have been found to be genuine, while the rest were linked to business or personal disputes and financial transactions, reads the report submitted by the additional inspector general (AIG) Operations.
The report further stated that out of the 44 confirmed extortion cases, police cracked 39, achieving 87% clearance rate. During investigations, 78 suspects were identified, 43 of whom were arrested, while five were killed during police encounters.
The report, which also includes a comparative review of crime statistics from the previous and current year, highlights the Sindh police's resolve to ensure a secure environment for economic activities, in close coordination with the business community.
IG Sindh Police Ghulam Nabi Memon stated that strict and indiscriminate action has been, and will continue to be, taken against elements involved in extortion and other crimes that undermine economic stability. He praised the cooperation of traders in supporting police efforts, particularly through the installation of CCTV cameras at commercial locations, following a public appeal by police.
