ISLAMABAD:

A medical expert has cautioned that excessive use of artificial sweeteners by health-conscious individuals could pose health risks, warning that frequent consumption may even affect the tongue's taste receptors.

Speaking to a private news channel, Nutritionist Dr Zubala Yasir Lutfi expressed concern over the growing reliance on artificial sweeteners as a "safe" alternative to sugar. She noted that many people consume them in large quantities without understanding their potential side effects.

"Just because something is labelled 'sugar-free' doesn't make it harmless," she said, stressing that while artificial sweeteners may help reduce calorie intake, overuse can disrupt the body's natural mechanisms.

Dr Lutfi explained that the tongue is lined with thousands of taste buds, each with receptors for different flavours. Continuous exposure to artificial sweeteners, she warned, can dull these receptors, alter taste preferences, and increase cravings for intensely sweet foods—ironically leading to unhealthy dietary habits.

She urged the public to practice moderation and focus on a balanced diet rich in whole foods, fruits, and vegetables. "Public awareness is essential to prevent what appears to be a healthy habit from turning into a silent risk," Dr Lutfi emphasised.
