Comedian Jessica Kirson has expressed “sincere regret” for performing at the Riyadh Comedy Festival in Saudi Arabia and confirmed that she has donated her entire performance fee to a human rights organisation.
Kirson, who is openly gay, was among more than 50 comedians who took part in the festival, including Dave Chappelle, Bill Burr, Kevin Hart, and Whitney Cummings.
The event, billed as the “world’s largest comedy festival,” has faced criticism due to Saudi Arabia’s record on human rights and its treatment of women and the LGBTQ community.
In a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, Kirson said she was “surprised” to be invited and had requested “a guarantee” that she could be “openly out as a lesbian on stage and perform gay material.”
She added, “I hoped that this could help LGBTQ+ people in Saudi Arabia feel seen and valued. I am grateful that I was able to do precisely that... At the same time, I deeply regret participating under the auspices of the Saudi government.”
Kirson apologised to fans who felt disappointed by her decision to appear at the event, saying, “I will take full responsibility for my actions and dedicate myself to making amends.”
Her statement follows public backlash from fans online, with many expressing disappointment over her participation.
While other comedians such as Bill Burr and Louis C.K. have defended their involvement, Kirson is the first performer from the lineup to issue a public apology and confirm the donation of her festival earnings.
