A flour crisis is once again emerging in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) after the suspension of wheat flour supplies from Punjab, with dealers warning of imminent price hikes if the flow was not restored.
According to dealers, the current flour stock in K-P would last only a few days. The disruption has already pushed prices sharply upward as the 20-kilogram bag now sells for Rs2,300, while the 80-kg sack has reached Rs9,500.
According to flour dealers, supply from Punjab has remained halted for the past two days. "If supplies are not resumed immediately, the 20-kg bag could jump to Rs2,500 and the 80-kg sack to Rs10,000," one dealer warned.
They said they had contacted government representatives in Punjab as well as Islamabad to press for resumption of supply, but no action had been taken so far.
Meanwhile, bakers staged a protest at Milad Chowk in Peshawar against the ban on Punjab flour supplies. Carrying banners and placards, the protest was led by Nanbai Association President Khasta Gul, General Secretary Jehanzai and Chairman Miraj Gul.
Addressing the demonstration, speakers demanded that the supply ban be lifted without delay.
