OpenAI has launched Sora, a new social video app designed for AI-generated content, alongside the release of its upgraded video model, Sora 2.
The platform, which rolled out September 30, 2025, is currently available to iPhone users in the United States and Canada.
The invite-only app mirrors TikTok’s format with a scrollable video feed but introduces a unique twist. Instead of traditional duets or stitches, users upload short clips that others can transform into AI-generated remixes, provided the original creator has given consent. Each invite includes access for the user plus four additional invitations to share with friends.
Sora currently limits AI-generated clips to 10 seconds. Its “cameo” system, powered by Sora 2, allows users to feature themselves in AI remixes by uploading their likeness. Importantly, the original uploader is recognized as a co-owner of all resulting videos, with the ability to revoke access or delete clips at any time.
To address ethical concerns, OpenAI has implemented strict restrictions. Public figures cannot be generated unless they voluntarily upload their own cameo, and adult or extreme content is banned from the platform. The company emphasizes that these safeguards are intended to prevent misuse while promoting creativity.
Sora 2 builds on the original Sora model introduced in late 2024, which showcased the ability to generate realistic short video clips from text prompts. That initial version was limited to research previews, but the latest launch represents the first integration of the technology into a consumer-facing social platform.
An Android release has not yet been announced. With Sora, OpenAI positions itself at the forefront of merging generative AI with short-form video entertainment.
