Arrowhead Game Studios has officially ruled out Helldivers 3—at least for now. CEO Shams Jorjani confirmed via Discord that the team has “no plans for HD3,” adding, “just HD2 for as long as it can go. Think RuneScape.”

Rather than following the typical sequel path, Arrowhead wants to take a live-service approach, turning Helldivers 2 into a long-term project akin to RuneScape, which has been running for 25 years with over 300 million accounts created. Jorjani and the team envision Helldivers 2 as a “forever game,” continually evolving with new content, systems, and updates.

Speculation around Helldivers 3 began when Jorjani mentioned a Destiny-like social hub being “on the feature list for the next one.” He later clarified that this referred to Arrowhead’s next game—not a sequel to Helldivers 2. Previous statements also indicated the studio’s intent to expand Helldivers 2 so significantly that it could feel like a third installment—just without the number.

“We can keep expanding it for a long time,” Jorjani said. “PlayStation is super supportive.”

Production Director Alex Bolle echoed this vision earlier this year, emphasizing the goal of supporting Helldivers 2 for “years and years,” fueled by a live-service model that allows for creative innovation.

And the future of the franchise isn't limited to games. In January, Sony announced a Helldivers 2 film adaptation, in partnership with Sony Pictures.

Helldivers 2 has already made a massive impact, becoming PlayStation Studios’ fastest-selling title ever with 12 million units sold in just 12 weeks.
