Matthew McConaughey has addressed speculation about starring in a potential Barbie sequel after being linked to the role of the “King of the Kens.”

The Oscar-winning actor shared his thoughts during a recent appearance on NBC’s Today show, where he was shown fan-made mockups of himself in the role.

“It’s already coming to life,” McConaughey said on September 16. “It’d be hard to say no to that, wouldn’t it?” The 55-year-old actor seemed enthusiastic about the idea, which was originally pitched by Barbie star America Ferrera.

Margot Robbie, who played Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s 2023 box office hit, reacted to the casting suggestion on the same program. When told McConaughey would be open to joining the franchise, Robbie smiled and replied, “Wonderful. Thank you for doing that.”

Despite the excitement, there has been no official confirmation of a Barbie sequel. Robbie previously explained that while the first film was a cultural phenomenon, any follow-up would depend on Gerwig, who directed and co-wrote the original film alongside Noah Baumbach.

“It would be up to Greta. I wouldn’t do it without Greta,” Robbie said. Gerwig herself has expressed doubts about continuing the story, telling The New York Times she felt she had already poured all her ideas into the first film.

While fans speculate about a Barbie 2, both McConaughey’s comments and Robbie’s reaction have reignited discussion about expanding Barbie Land with new characters. For now, the possibility of McConaughey as the “King of the Kens” remains an idea awaiting Gerwig’s decision.
