Cardi B has admitted to falling asleep during her recent civil assault trial, telling The Jennifer Hudson Show that exhaustion from her upcoming album rollout left her unable to stay awake in court.

The Grammy Award-winning rapper had been caught on camera dozing off during proceedings earlier this month.

Addressing the viral clips, she said: “I’m not even going to lie, I was. I had a long night! I’m in the middle of an album rollout. I was so sleepy, I was trying to fight it.” Cardi explained she attempted breathing exercises to remain alert but “couldn’t stay awake.”

Reflecting on the trial experience, she added: “I’m so overwhelmed. I’m in the middle of an album rollout, and I have to go to court. And then, when I get to court, I realise that it’s going to be on national TV, being televised. It’s like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me’ … I missed my kids’ first day of school.”

Earlier in September, Cardi won the civil case brought against her by security guard Emani Ellis. Ellis alleged the rapper struck and scratched her during a 2018 altercation at a Beverly Hills medical building. However, all 12 jurors unanimously found in Cardi’s favour, ruling she did not assault Ellis.

Following the verdict, Cardi urged fans not to harass Ellis but also warned she would respond differently to future lawsuits. “The next person who tries to do a frivolous lawsuit against me, I’m going to counter-sue, and I’m gonna make you pay,” she said outside court in Alhambra, California.

The trial concluded just days before the release of Cardi B’s second album Am I the Drama?, arriving September 19 with guest appearances from Janet Jackson, Selena Gomez, Megan Thee Stallion, Lizzo, and others.
