Former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton has died at the age of 46, Greater Manchester Police confirmed on Sunday. Authorities stated that Hatton was found at his home, and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Hatton, affectionately known as “The Hitman,” was one of Britain’s most celebrated fighters. Over a 15-year professional career, he captured world titles in two weight divisions—light-welterweight and welterweight—winning 45 of his 48 bouts. Among his most memorable fights were his 2005 victory over Kostya Tszyu in Manchester and his knockout win against Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas two years later. Hatton also faced global icons Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, bouts that cemented his place on the world stage.

Tributes have poured in from across the sporting world. Fellow British fighter Amir Khan described Hatton as “a friend, a mentor, a warrior,” while Tyson Fury declared, “there will only ever be one Ricky Hatton.” Unified champion Ellie Scotney wrote on social media that Hatton’s impact on boxing “will forever live on.” Manny Pacquiao, who defeated Hatton in 2009, remembered him as both “a great fighter” and “a kind man in life.”

Fans have also shared their memories, recalling Hatton’s approachable nature, humor, and willingness to connect. Many praised him as a “people’s champion” whose authenticity resonated with supporters. Manchester City, Hatton’s lifelong football club, honored him with a “minute of appreciation” during the derby match against Manchester United, with fans singing “Blue Moon” in his memory.

Hatton had openly discussed his struggles with mental health following career defeats, and later used his platform to inspire others through coaching and exhibitions. His enduring legacy, both inside and outside the ring, continues to be celebrated.
