The minister spoke of the overall monitoring cell set up at Bilawal House which will allow President Asif Ali Zardari himself to keep an eye on relief work. It will stay in Sindh until the flood emergency is brought under control. Information officers, district press club members and representatives of DCOs will also keep an eye on the work on a daily basis.
Awan said that providing the people with shelter is the priority because this, in turn, will help stem the spread of diseases.
About 20 of 91 projects deal with health hazards, she said. These projects are particularly beneficial for flood victims in particular as they not only relate to vaccinations but also include the provision of safe delivery kits and other medical needs. She said that preparations to vaccinate children in flood-hit areas against the polio virus have also been made.
“The media can identify success stories that can be replicated and also point out any issues that need to be addressed on an urgent basis,” she added.
