Karachi’s water supply has been disrupted after a section of the newly constructed Hub Canal was damaged due to flash floods in the city’s drainage system. The canal, built at a cost of Rs12 billion, had been inaugurated just a month ago.
A spokesperson for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) said: “The Hub Canal has been affected due to flash floods in the drainage system. Repair work will be completed soon.”
According to officials, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari inaugurated the New Hub Canal on August 13. However, heavy rains in Karachi caused flooding near the Northern Bypass, washing away a 20-metre section of the canal and halting water supply to the city.
“The floodwaters passing through the Northern Bypass collided with both the old and new Hub Canal, damaging the canals,” the KWSB spokesperson added. They also noted that a Sui Gas pipeline running over the canal has been dislodged, further affecting a 20-metre section.
Emergency repair work on the damaged section of the canal has begun and is expected to be completed within the next 36 hours. During this period, water supply to Karachi’s West, Central, and Keamari districts will remain temporarily suspended.
The KWSB spokesperson urged residents to use water judiciously, assuring that supply will be restored once repairs are complete.
