Fede Álvarez has confirmed he won’t be directing the sequel to his 2024 hit Alien: Romulus, though he’ll remain closely involved as a producer alongside Ridley Scott.
Speaking to TooFab at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights, Álvarez revealed that the script for the sequel is complete — co-written with longtime collaborator Rodo Sayagues — but that he’s stepping aside as director.
“We just finished the script for the sequel, but I’m going to pass the torch on this one,” Álvarez said. “I’ll be producing it with Ridley Scott, and we’re currently looking for a new filmmaker to come in.”
He added that this kind of handoff is typical for the Alien franchise. “Except for Ridley, filmmakers usually come in, make one, and pass the baton. We wrote the story because we love what we started with Romulus and want to continue it — we just need a director who’s ready to go for the jugular.”
Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson are expected to return for the sequel, which will be released by 20th Century Studios. A director has not yet been announced.
