The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards saw Sabrina Carpenter deliver one of the most talked-about performances of the night as she paid tribute to Britney Spears.

Performing her new single "Tears" from the album Man’s Best Friend, the singer channelled Spears' iconic rain-drenched moment from the 2001 Dream Within a Dream tour.

Carpenter began the set against a city-inspired backdrop, joined by RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants as backup dancers. Dressed in a glittering oversized top with sparkling tights, she later revealed a bedazzled bra that drew immediate comparisons to Spears' million-dollar Victoria’s Secret diamond bra.

As water poured down on stage, Carpenter danced through the simulated rain, echoing Spears' legendary performance of "Baby One More Time". Fans quickly noted the parallels online.

The homage comes after Carpenter publicly praised Spears at the 2024 VMAs. Spears responded at the time with a rare social media post, saying: “Thanks, that’s cool! She made me cool! I forget I’m famous sometimes, because I’m a mom, I’m kind of old.”

The 26-year-old singer also contrasted her bold on-stage look with an elegant red Valentino gown on the VMAs red carpet, complete with diamond jewellery and a feathered boa.
