Capcom has acknowledged that the steep cost of PlayStation 5 gaming is impacting sales of Monster Hunter Wilds. The game had an explosive launch in February, selling a record-breaking 10.1 million copies, with 8 million sold in just three days. It quickly became the best-selling game in the U.S. for the year, according to Circana.
However, sales have since slowed. For the quarter ending June 30, Monster Hunter Wilds sold 477,000 copies—only slightly ahead of the 389,000 copies of Monster Hunter Rise, a title that’s four years old. Wilds ranked as Capcom’s 9th best-selling game of the quarter, while Rise took 10th place.
In its financial report, Capcom noted that while sales for Wilds were soft, Rise continued to see steady growth. Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto told Nikkei Gaming that the “rather steep” cost of entry to play Wilds on PS5 was a key factor, especially since Capcom expected PS5 to be the primary sales platform at launch.
Sony’s recent $50 price increase on PS5 consoles—pushing the base model to $549.99—has likely worsened the situation. Sony cited ongoing economic challenges as the reason behind the price hike, effective from August 21 in the U.S.
Capcom is looking at discounts and new content patches to boost sales. A launch on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 could also help expand the audience.
Player feedback has highlighted other issues, including lackluster endgame content and unresolved PC performance problems. Despite new seasons and updates, many fans remain frustrated, with some even harassing Capcom team members online—an unfortunate side effect of the game's rocky post-launch support.
