The All Pakistan Organization of Small Traders and Cottage Industries has demanded the immediate suspension of Assistant Commissioner Liaquatabad, Subhan Ranjha, over alleged harassment and anti-business actions targeting small traders.
The demand was made by the organisation's president Mahmood Hameed, during a press conference held at the Karachi Press Club on Tuesday. Addressing the media, he called on the Sindh government to initiate judicial investigations into what he described as illegal and oppressive actions taken by the assistant commissioner against traders in Liaquatabad.
"Liaquatabad's market contributes more in taxes than Faisalabad, yet its traders are being treated with contempt," Hameed said. "Merchandise is being seized without justification, shop locks are being broken illegally, and goods are hauled away in trucks. There is a continuing cycle of extortion and lawlessness under official cover."
The traders' representatives issued an ultimatum, warning that if action is not taken against Subhan Ranjha within 72 hours, they would block major roads in Liaquatabad and launch citywide protests.
Mahmood Hameed was joined by Sharif Memon, chairman of the Bolton Market Traders Association; Muhammad Aslam Khan, general secretary of the Cooperative Market; Babar Khan Bangash, deputy general secretary of small traders; and Saleem Malik, president of Sports Market.
