Liaqat Bagh, the historic recreational site, has been transformed into a dumping ground, with heaps of rubbish emitting a nauseating stench that is fostering disease across the surrounding area.
The Citizen Action Committee (CAC) has warned that unless the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) removes the waste depot, they will stage a sit-in and blockade the office in protest.
Committee Chairman Zaheer Ahmad Awan described filth and garbage as the city's most pressing problem. RWMC has established a waste depot within Liaqat Bagh, where hundreds of tonnes of refuse have accumulated. The resulting filth and stench have caused a surge in mosquitoes and flies throughout the neighbourhood.
Localities including Arya Mohallah, Nadeem Colony, Liaqat Road, College Road, Moti Mahal, and adjacent settlements are being severely affected. Travel along Murree Road has become difficult for vehicles, motorcycles, and pedestrians. Numerous schools on Murree Road and Liaqat Road place children at heightened risk from the unhygienic conditions.
Awan cautioned that if RWMC fails to clear the depot, the Citizen Action Committee would organise a sit-in outside its offices. He added that residents are falling ill due to the intolerable stench and filth.
