Following the recent flood situation, prices of essential commodities have seen an artificial hike across the city. The price of a 20-kg bag of Double Super flour rose from Rs1,400 to Rs1,850 in the local market, while the 80-kg sack of fine flour used in tandoors increased from Rs7,000 to Rs8,500.
President of the Nanbai Association, Muhammad Bashir Butt, said that with such steep flour prices, it has become nearly impossible to provide affordable bread to the public. He termed the sudden hike during a difficult time "highly unjust."
Butt further alleged that the district administration has completely failed to monitor the arbitrary price increases. Members of the association claimed that a deliberate attempt is being made to create an artificial crisis, as flour is being hoarded and made to disappear from the market overnight.
Despite this, no legal action has been taken against those responsible.
The timing of the hike drew further criticism, as hoarders raised prices just as the newly appointed deputy commissioner assumed charge.
