Fritz makes triumphant start
NEWS DESK: aylor Fritz kicked off his US Open campaign with a 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 victory over wildcard compatriot Emilio Nava at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Sunday. Nava fought hard in the first set until the final game, where he surrendered his serve after committing a couple of unforced errors. Following the first set, Fritz took total control of the match, breaking his opponent from the baseline to clinch the second set and repeated the same performance in the third set. Fritz, who was runner-up to Jannik Sinner and became the first American since 2006 to reach the US Open final last year, is hoping to join the likes of Madison Keys or Coco Gauff, who both claimed Grand Slam titles this season.

Chelsea to bank £270m
NEWS DESK: Chelsea have given permission to Borussia Dortmund to fly Carney Chukwuemeka and Aaron Anselmino to Germany to complete moves that will take player sales at Stamford Bridge this summer to beyond £270m. Chukwuemeka, 21, spent the second half of last season on loan at Dortmund and is set to sign on a permanent basis for a fee rising to about £24m, with a significant sell-on clause included. The England Under-20 international was keen to move back to the Westfalenstadion despite interest from RB Leizpig and is in the process of finalising his return. That deal would take Chelsea's income from player sales this summer to a league-high £273.4m, which almost balances out the £277m spent on incoming transfers.

Root leads Rockets into knockouts
NEWS DESK: Joe Root's sublime 64 not out led Trent Rockets to a tense three-wicket win over Welsh Fire and confirmed their place in the knockouts of The Hundred men's competition. Chasing 151 at Cardiff, Rockets were cruising at 116-2 with 25 balls to go, but lost five wickets for 20 runs as Fire's bowlers dragged themselves back into contention. With the visitors needing 18 from 10 balls, David Payne removed Marcus Stoinis and David Willey to make Fire the favourites with 14 needed from five. But Root held his nerve, whacking a six and a four to regain control and Sam Hain struck the winning runs with a ball to spare.

Zhao misses 147
NEWS DESK: Zhao Xintong narrowly missed out on a 147 break after Xiao Guodong had earlier hit a maximum as both players progressed to the second round at the Wuhan Open. World champion Zhao, 28, of China fluffed a straightforward final pink as he closed in on a 147 during a 5-3 victory over Ukraine's Iulian Boiko. Zhao, who made back-to-back breaks of 132 and 134, the latter in his near-miss, rounded off the win with a visit of 122. Defending champion Xiao, 36, had earlier made a maximum during his 5-0 thrashing of former women's world champion Mink Nutcharut of Thailand. "To make a 147 here today - and my first ever maximum break in China - was really special. I was thrilled to achieve that," China's Xiao told World Snooker.

Vingegaard takes Vuelta lead
NEWS DESK: Jonas Vingegaard claimed his first World Tour win in more than a year as he edged out Giulio Ciccone to take stage two of the Vuelta a Espana. The two-time Tour de France champion had not secured a top-tier win since stage 11 of last year's Tour. But on a cool, rainy 10km climb to the finish, the Visma–Lease a Bike rider beat Italian climber Ciccone in a late sprint for the line in Limone, Italy. That also saw race favourite Vingegaard claim the red jersey from overnight leader Jasper Philipsen, with the Belgian sprinter having struggled in the finale.

Tottenham eye Savinho

NEWS DESK: Tottenham are still pushing to sign Manchester City winger Savinho, talkSPORT understands. Spurs have indicated to City they are willing to pay €70million (£60.7m) for the Brazilian, who is keen to make the move. The player is yet to feature in his club's first two games of the season due to injury. Still just 21 years old, the winger signed for Man City at £30.8m last summer, making 29 appearances and scoring one goal. He did, though, make eight assists, as Pep Guardiola's team endured a difficult season with patchy form throughout. The skilful Brazilian was previously a success out on loan with Girona from Troyes in 2023/24, where he earned plaudits in LaLiga.

Arsenal get Saka, Odegaard boost
NEWS DESK: Arsenal have been given a boost after scans on Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard suggested that neither have suffered long-term injuries despite both being substituted early in the Gunners' 5-0 win over Leeds United. Captain Odegaard was withdrawn in the first half with a shoulder injury while Saka left the field in the second half with a suspected hamstring injury. Speaking post match, manager Mikel Arteta said he thought the injury to Saka was "significant", but those fears have been eased with sources saying neither player will be out for a substantial period. Saka suffered a serious injury to his right hamstring last season which kept him out for four months but the issue picked up in Saturday's match is not to the same leg.
