Paramount has officially canceled Dexter: Original Sin after its first season, reversing an earlier renewal announcement.
Sources reveal that no production dates for a second season were ever scheduled, despite the April renewal news. The prequel series, which explored the origins of Dexter Morgan in 1991, debuted in December 2024 and concluded its only season in February 2025.
The decision comes as Paramount reassesses its premium content lineup following the Skydance-Paramount merger. The network’s leadership, led by Matt Thunell, reportedly chose to prioritize Dexter: Resurrection, the continuation of the Dexter franchise featuring Michael C. Hall reprising his iconic role.
Paramount is preparing to open a writers room for Dexter: Resurrection season 2. The show premiered on July 11, 2025, with its finale set for September 5. Its first season drew 4.4 million multiplatform viewers in the first week and holds a 94% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, signaling strong audience interest.
Dexter: Original Sin starred Patrick Gibson as the young Dexter, with Hall providing the character’s inner monologue. The cast also included Molly Brown, Christina Milian, Christian Slater, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson, and special guests Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey. Clyde Phillips, the original Dexter showrunner, returned as creator and executive producer, alongside Hall and other producers.
The cancellation highlights Showtime’s continued shift under Paramount+, as the network narrows its scripted slate to a few flagship series, including The Chi, Yellowjackets, and the Dexter franchise. Despite Original Sin’s abrupt end, the franchise’s future remains promising with Dexter: Resurrection season 2 in development.
