Bob Odenkirk has expressed interest in returning to his iconic role as Saul Goodman but acknowledges that any potential revival of Better Call Saul would likely be confined to a prison setting. Speaking on NBC’s Today show, the actor reflected on the legacy of the acclaimed Breaking Bad prequel series, which concluded in 2022 with Saul receiving an 86-year prison sentence for his crimes.
“That part turned my life around,” Odenkirk said, adding that he devoted more to playing Saul than any other role in his career. He praised the show’s creators, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, calling them “some of the best writers who ever worked in TV.”
While the possibility of revisiting Saul isn’t off the table, Odenkirk admitted it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon, as Gilligan and Gould are currently focused on new projects. “I think they’ve all moved on to some more amazing projects that you’ll soon see,” he said.
Odenkirk emphasized that any future storyline would have to acknowledge the character’s incarceration. “He’s not getting out,” the actor said. “If there’s another Saul show, it takes place inside prison.”
Better Call Saul, which ran for six seasons from 2015 to 2022, was critically acclaimed and garnered a record 53 Emmy nominations without a single win. It also received six Golden Globe nominations. Despite the lack of major awards, the show is widely regarded as one of television’s finest dramas.
Currently, Odenkirk is promoting Nobody 2, the sequel to his 2021 action film, while continuing to explore new projects outside the Breaking Bad universe. However, his comments suggest that while the door isn’t closed on Saul Goodman’s return, the bars of his fictional prison remain firmly in place.
