RAWALPINDI:

An officer of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency was allegedly abducted under mysterious circumstances in Rawalpindi. Sub-Inspector Sarim Khan went to offer Friday prayers from his office in the Saddar area but never returned. His vehicle was later found parked near a mosque.

According to the FIR lodged on the complaint of his brother, Asim Ali, the 30-year-old officer resided in Quaid-e-Azam Colony, Chakri Road, and was serving with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency in Rawalpindi. He left home for duty as usual on Friday, but after the prayers his mobile phone was found switched off. His friend, Tahir Mohiuddin, confirmed that Sarim had gone to a mosque beyond Rawalpindi Saddar to offer Friday prayers, but when checked later, his car was found abandoned in a nearby street while his phone remained unreachable.

Police have registered a kidnapping case and launched an investigation. An officer of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency, requesting anonymity, revealed that Sub-Inspector Sarim had been working on cases involving anti-state social media posts around Independence Day. However, it is not yet clear if his disappearance is linked to that assignment.

Meanwhile, Rawalpindi police officials said CCTV footage from the mosque route and other areas is being collected, and investigations are underway from all possible angles.

On the other hand, police has intensified its crackdown against criminal elements, arresting two members of an organised gang, including a woman actively involved in theft activities. An official said the Golra police team, acting on technical and human intelligence, carried out a targeted operation leading to the arrest of Asif Khan and a female accomplice, Sumbal. He said the woman had been playing a key role in the gang's theft operations, often using her presence to mislead victims during incidents.
