ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan has taken the lead in rallying regional support for a fair and effective Global Plastics Treaty, urging equal access to green financing and technology for developing nations.

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr Musadik Malik chaired an interactive briefing with delegations from Bangladesh, Egypt, Tajikistan, Malaysia, and Sudan on the sidelines of the Fifth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC-5.2) in Geneva. The session aims to finalise an agreement to curb plastic pollution.

Malik warned that the poorest countries are being left behind in the fight against environmental degradation. "Those consuming the most plastic get the largest share of green financing, while developing nations bear the worst environmental and socio-economic impacts," he said. He stressed that the treaty must include technology transfer, capacity building, and financing mechanisms prioritising countries most affected by climate change and plastic pollution.
