'Bend It Like Beckham' sequel finally happening after over two decades

‘Bend It Like Beckham’ sequel in development, Director Gurinder Chadha confirms.

More than two decades after its groundbreaking debut, Bend It Like Beckham is officially getting a sequel. As per Deadline, Director Gurinder Chadha is developing a follow-up to the 2002 hit film, which starred Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley. Chadha said the idea came to her recently and that she's now “inspired” to revisit the characters and expand on the film’s legacy in women’s football.

“I’m excited to revisit the original characters and revive the enduring story,” Chadha said, adding that the project is being developed with hopes of returning cast members including Nagra, Knightley, Archie Panjabi, and Juliet Stevenson. While the original cast is aware of the sequel, Chadha noted that they are waiting to see the script before committing. “Everything hinges on the script,” she explained.

The sequel is being timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original film and the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Chadha is collaborating on the screenplay with her husband and co-writer Paul Mayeda Berges, and has recently begun working closely with Emma Hayes, head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team, who described the original film as life-changing.

British Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has voiced her support for the project, praising its cultural impact and its role in telling an empowering national story. The original film, which faced industry skepticism before becoming a global success, remains a cultural touchstone, particularly for its positive portrayal of girls in sports.

Chadha emphasized that the sequel will be “hard-hitting but incredibly joyous,” aiming to inspire a new generation just as the original did. “There’s more I can do,” she said, “and now feels like the right time.”
