MANCHESTER: Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United’s flying start to the season is all the more impressive considering the severity of their Premier League fixture list.

The defending champions blew away Chelsea 3-1 to equal a club record of 18 consecutive home wins, which moved them two points clear of second-placed Manchester City at the top of the table.

Ferguson was clearly proud of his team’s fine run of form.

“We’ve had tough teams at Old Trafford, Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea, and we thought the fixture list had given us a real test,” said Ferguson.”We’re getting the tough ones early on but you’ve got to have them sometime.

“We’re enjoying our football, playing with great enthusiasm. We could’ve scored six or seven against Chelsea. That threat is encouraging.”

The match witnessed goals from Chris Smalling, Nani and Wayne Rooney in the first half before Fernando Torres reduced the deficit in the second half for Chelsea. Despite the convincing win, Ferguson was left ruing injuries to Smalling and Mexican striker Javier Hernandez who could be ruled out for two weeks after a rough tackle from Ashley Cole.

Chelsea are now five points off the leaders but Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas feels his team have already shown they will challenge all the way for the title.

“United are in a good position now but it’s very early,” he said. “I said before the game that nothing that happened here would mean anything in the Premier League table.”
