Degari honour killing suspect remanded

In a major development in the Degari honour killing case, primary suspect Sardar Sherbaz Satakzai was presented before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC-I) in Quetta on Monday. Presiding Judge Muhammad Mubeen granted a 10-day physical remand to the Special Crime Investigation Wing (SCIW) for further interrogation.

Satakzai, a prominent figure in the region, is accused of involvement in the murder of a man and a woman in the Degari-Sanjidi area, in what authorities believe was an honour-related incident. The case has sparked outrage and calls for action against violence rooted in traditional practices.

Investigators sought extended remand to follow new leads, identify other possible suspects, and examine the broader circumstances surrounding the crime.

The incident, which came to light earlier this month, has prompted the Balochistan High Court to take suo motu notice. Civil society and human rights advocates have urged the provincial government to ensure justice and accountability.

Observers see the case as a key test of the state's resolve to confront violence stemming from informal justice systems.
