Nathan Fillion brings chaos and charm as Guy Gardner in Superman and Lanterns
Nathan Fillion is stepping into the DC Universe as Guy Gardner, one of the most brash and polarizing members of the Green Lantern Corps.
He’ll debut the character in James Gunn’s Superman, set for release in July 2025, and reprise the role in HBO Max’s upcoming series Lanterns.
Known for his long-running voice work as Hal Jordan in animated DC films, Fillion is now bringing a very different kind of Lantern to life one that’s louder, ruder, and far more unpredictable.
In recent interviews, Fillion described Guy Gardner as “the last person you’d want to save you.” He’s proud, impulsive, and high-strung, with a tough exterior that often masks insecurity and vulnerability.
Fillion insisted on keeping the character’s iconic bowl haircut, fully embracing Gardner’s comic-accurate look.
He also revealed that Lanterns features more profanity from him than any role he’s played before, signaling a raw, grounded tone for the show.
The Lanterns series will focus on a mystery rooted on Earth and follow John Stewart and Hal Jordan as leads, with Guy Gardner serving as a more chaotic presence in their orbit. Fillion says Gardner clashes with others easily, especially when things aren’t going his way.
His version of the character also appears in Peacemaker Season 2, where his personality is expected to collide dramatically with John Cena’s no-nonsense antihero.
Fans have already reacted with excitement, praising the casting and Fillion’s comedic timing. Gardner is a complicated character equal parts obnoxious and heroic and Fillion seems eager to lean into every extreme.
As DC Studios builds its new connected universe, Gardner’s arrival promises to bring an irreverent and combustible energy to the Lantern mythos, balancing humor with conflict in a way that only Fillion can deliver.
