On Independence Day, Elon Musk reignited calls for a new political party in the United States, launching a poll on X (formerly Twitter) asking followers whether he should form the “America Party.”
As of Friday afternoon, over 459,000 users had voted, with 62.1% supporting the idea.
Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system!

Should we create the America Party?
Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been sharply critical of the recently passed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” a sweeping budget deal backed by President Donald Trump. The billionaire labeled the legislation as “pork-filled” and a “disgusting abomination,” warning that it could add $3.9 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade.
Previously a leading figure in Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk resigned amid disagreements over government spending. He claims the bill undermines cost-cutting efforts and makes “a mockery” of DOGE’s work.
Musk proposed a focused electoral strategy for the America Party—targeting 2 to 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts in the 2026 midterms. He argues that in a politically divided Congress, these swing votes could steer legislation to reflect “the true will of the people.”
Tensions have escalated between Musk and Trump’s team, with White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller blasting Musk’s opposition as a threat to middle-class tax relief. Meanwhile, Musk has thrown social media support behind fiscal conservatives like Sen. Rand Paul and Rep. Thomas Massie, who voted against the bill.
Musk's political maneuvering comes after he reportedly spent $290 million supporting Trump in 2024. Now, the world’s richest man may become one of Trump’s loudest critics heading into the next election cycle.
