Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota died in a car accident in Spain just hours after sharing a joyful video of his wedding on social media. The Liverpool striker, 28, was killed alongside his brother, André Silva, 26, when their Lamborghini crashed and burst into flames on the A-52 motorway in Zamora, northern Spain. The pair were reportedly overtaking when a tyre blew out, causing the fatal accident.
The heartbreaking tragedy comes less than two weeks after Jota married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three young children. On Wednesday, Jota posted a video from the ceremony showing touching moments from the day, including dancing, laughter, and the couple's children dressed up to celebrate with them. He captioned it simply:, 'A day we will never forget 🤍.'
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the devastating news, calling Jota not only a brilliant player with nearly 50 caps but also 'an extraordinary person, respected by all.' They requested a minute’s silence ahead of the women’s European Championship match between Portugal and Spain to honour the brothers.
The couple’s love story spanned over a decade, beginning in their teens and growing alongside Jota’s football career. Together, they built a family and shared their happiest milestones online, from prom nights to pregnancy announcements.
Now, the football community mourns not just a talented forward, but a man whose life was cut tragically short at its brightest moment.
