Eight killed, 27 injured across Punjab

Heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds claimed eight lives and left 27 people injured across Punjab on Sunday.

According to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmed, the casualties were caused by incidents of wall collapse, roof cave-in, falling billboards and lightning strikes in the Lahore, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Kasur and Nankana Sahib districts.

The weather system brought torrential rains accompanied by gusty winds that caused widespread structural damage and infrastructure failures.

In Lahore, the most devastating incident occurred in Ahmed Town's Shareefpura area, where a single-storey house constructed with mud and wooden beams collapsed during the storm. The collapse killed two family members — 25-year-old Uzma and seven-month-old Alina. A 45-year-old man, Rana Mehmood, suffered injuries in the incident. All victims were transported to the Services Hospital.

Another fatal incident occurred near Shera Kot on Band Road, where a large billboard fell onto a motorcycle during the storm, leaving 50-year-old Shahid dead and his 35-year-old wife Jamila and a child injured. The victims were rushed to the Jinnah Hospital.

An incident of wall collapse on Katar Band Road claimed the life of 25-year-old Shakeel.

Similar incidents were reported across Lahore, including at Nain Sukh Chowk on Hazrat Ali Road where one person was injured, and near Shahdara Town's Pindi Cemetery where three people suffered injuries.

Other incidents occurred on Peco Road at a bus stop where a person was struck by falling stones, and on Infantry Road in Dharampura where a wall collapse injured an individual.

In Gujranwala district, lightning strikes proved fatal at two locations. A 25-year-old man, Hazira, died when struck by lightning in Phame Soran area in Noshera Virkan. In another incident in Bale Wali village near Nandpur, 20-year-old Zain was electrocuted during the storm.

A roof collapse incident was also reported in Nawan Pind near Malhi Chowk, leaving one person injured. Sheikhupura district recorded a fatality when a wall collapsed in Khan Pur village, killing 10-year-old Saher.

The district witnessed multiple structural failures, including wall collapses in Kot Abdul Malik, where one person was injured, and in Kathala Virkan where another person suffered injuries.

Roof collapse incidents in Chhapa Manaran village on Hafizabad Road injured two people, while a falling flex board injured two others. Injuries were also reported due to collisions in strong winds in 16 Chak near Mera Bagwan Sharqpur, and from slipping on wet ground in Pind Rattan Singh, Muridke. Wall collapse incidents in Purana Qila Sattar Shah and in Kot Abdul Malik injured three people.

Kasur district recorded injuries to three people from wall collapses in Man Singh Wala and roof collapse in Kot Fatah Baaz Khan.

Teams were also engaged in clearing fallen trees from major thoroughfares, including Canal Road, Model Town, Samanabad and Dharampura, to restore traffic flow.
