PESHAWAR:

The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) has foiled a major terror plot, killing a suicide bomber and his handler during an intelligence-based operation in the Shamshatoo area of Peshawar.

According to CTD officials, the operation was carried out on a tip-off, preventing what could have been a significant attack on a sensitive installation in the province.

“A suicide bomber and his handler were killed during the raid. Both belonged to the banned terrorist outfit Fitna Al-Khawarij,” a CTD spokesperson said. “They were planning a high-impact attack on a critical target.”

The CTD confirmed that the suicide attacker had entered Pakistan from Afghanistan. Weapons, a suicide vest, a submachine gun (SMG), a pistol, and explosive material were recovered from the site.

The slain suicide bomber was identified as Munir Ahmed Gul. The CTD said the terrorists opened fire during the raid, but no casualties were reported among security personnel. “This successful intelligence operation has thwarted a major terrorist attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” the CTD added in a statement.

The department said it remains vigilant against cross-border threats and militant elements trying to destabilise the province. Investigations are underway to determine if the group had any local facilitators.
