Inmate killed, three injured in prison van ambush

Police sources link attack to clash between two groups of Rind tribe

HYDERABAD:

A prisoner died, while two others were injured, in an ambush on a prison van returning to the central jail in Khairpur, on Tuesday. Reportedly, one of the attackers was also injured in the exchange of fire.

Reportedly, the prisoners were disembarking when five armed men initiated an assault, killing inmate Muhammad Hashim Rind on the spot, and injuring inmates Imamuddin Rind and Sikandar Gopang. One of the assailants, identified as Wahab Rind, also sustained a bullet wound by a prison warden. He was later arrested. The injured individuals were shifted to Civil Hospital Khairpur, and are reportedly in serious conditions, while the deceased's inmate's body was handed over to his family after post-mortem.

Meanwhile, a police source reported that the clash between two groups of the Rind cast started around three months ago, after the killing of Nasir Hussain Rind. The slain inmate Hashim, and the injured inmate Imamuddin were arrested and imprisoned in connection with Nasir's murder. The ambush occurred when they were returning from the court hearing of the murder case.

SSP Khairpur visited the crime scene, and revealed that an investigation regarding the incident has started, and police have collected evidence from the crime scene.
