A horrifying scene unfolded Saturday morning when a 31-year-old gunman drove a truck into Crosspointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan and opened fire during a Sunday service, police confirmed.
Thanks to the quick action of a heroic church security guard, the gunman was shot and killed before police arrived, potentially preventing a mass tragedy. One churchgoer was injured, suffering a gunshot wound to the leg, authorities said.
The shooting occurred around 11:15 a.m., just 30 minutes after the service began. Shocking livestream footage captured the chaos as attendees, including families with children, were told to flee. A loud bang, believed to be a gunshot, sent the crowd scrambling to the back of the church for safety.
Police and multiple agencies, including the FBI, are investigating the incident. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed the bureau’s leadership and support teams are now on the scene.
Deputy Chief Finley Carter III of the Wayne Police Department praised the guard’s bravery, with locals calling him a “hero” who “saved countless lives.” Witnesses reported hearing what sounded like over 100 rounds of gunfire, followed by the guard’s decisive shots that ended the threat.
The area remains cordoned off as authorities continue gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses.
This incident adds to the growing concern over active shooter threats at places of worship, prompting renewed discussions around church security nationwide.
