On June 18, 2025, former NCT member Moon Taeil admitted to rape charges during a hearing at the Seoul Central District Court, alongside co-defendants identified by their surnames Lee and Hong. The three men were indicted in February for sexually assaulting a heavily intoxicated Chinese tourist in Seoul on June 13, 2024.

Prosecutors are now seeking a seven-year prison sentence for each defendant. The court will announce its final ruling on July 10, 2025.

Addressing the court, Taeil expressed remorse, stating, “I most deeply regret and feel sorry for the harm I caused the victim. I also apologize to everyone who was disappointed in me. If given leniency, I will consider it my last chance in life and do my best to contribute to society.”

Public knowledge of the case first emerged in August 2024 when SM Entertainment, NCT’s management company, confirmed Taeil’s departure from the group following his involvement in a sexual assault case. His contract was officially terminated in October as the investigation progressed.

Taeil debuted with NCT in 2016, serving as one of the group’s lead vocalists and its eldest member. His sudden exit and subsequent criminal charges shocked fans and stirred broader discussion within South Korea’s entertainment industry.

This case has renewed public scrutiny of celebrity behavior and accountability. Advocacy groups continue to push for justice for victims of sexual violence, particularly when public figures are involved.
