Ban on plastic bags kicks in from today

District administrations, police, and SEPA teams will be on the ground to conduct operations with zero leniency

KARACHI:

The grace period granted by the Sindh government to industries and shopkeepers regarding plastic shopping bags has officially ended. Starting today, a complete and enforceable ban on plastic bags is in place across the province, with clear orders for strict action, not just announcements.

Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Coastal Development Sindh Agha Shah Nawaz Khan has firmly warned all manufacturers, suppliers, wholesalers, and retailers that the production, distribution, or use of plastic bags will no longer be tolerated under any circumstances. Violators will face hefty fines, possible arrests, and closure of factories.

District administrations, police, and Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) teams will be on the ground to conduct operations with zero leniency.

Agha Shah Nawaz said that ample warnings and awareness campaigns were already carried out over time, and now there is no room left for further tolerance. All factory owners, wholesalers, and retailers have been instructed to immediately halt the plastic bag business or face strict legal consequences.
