Environmental surveillance has detected wild poliovirus in a sewage sample from Hyderabad, according to a report of the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad.
A health official said that the sample had been tested positive for the fifth month in the ongoing year. The samples were collected from the sewage pumping stations in City and Qasimabad.
Pakistan is one of the two remaining countries in the world where polio is still categorized as an endemic viral infection, the other one being Afghanistan.
