
Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has decided to discontinue the collection of electricity bill payments through Pakistan Post from July 1st.
In a letter sent to Pakistan Post Headquarters, the company stated that the move aims to digitise the manual collection system and prevent losses in cash collections.
Pakistan Post sources expressed surprise at this abrupt unilateral decision, while confirming that post offices continue to provide services for electricity, gas, telephone, and WASA bill collections despite facing significant financial losses.
They said that its continuation is for public convenience and to maintain the national institution's dignity. Public trust in post offices, especially in rural areas, is evident from statistics showing that during the last fiscal year, over 42.8 million electricity company bills were collected at post offices, including 10 million bills for IESCO. Similar figures are emerging for the current fiscal year as well.
It has been learned that while IESCO and all other electricity companies and utility providers already have alternative proposed facilities available, the majority of the public still relies on Pakistan Post.
