The hip-hop community is mourning the loss of Atlanta icon D.R.E.S. Tha Beatnik, who passed away on June 9, 2025, following a long battle with chronic kidney disease.
Known for his beatboxing, emceeing, and cultural contributions, D.R.E.S.—short for Divine Real Essence of Sound—was a foundational figure in Atlanta’s underground scene.
Tributes poured in from hip-hop luminaries including Killer Mike, Pete Rock, Trackstar the DJ, Big Gipp, and others. Killer Mike shared on social media, “We have lost a hero… a leader and library of history in losing you.” Fiona Bloom, Atlanta radio legend and publicist, added, “He lit up every room he walked into… This is a huge loss not just for Atlanta but for the Hip-Hop Planet.”
