KARACHI:

Investigations were ongoing on Wednesday into the mass escape of prisoners from Malir District Jail.

Over the past 24 hours, 27 more inmates have been re-arrested and returned to the jail, bringing the total number of recaptured prisoners to 105. However, 111 inmates remain at large.

Separate search operations are underway across various parts of the city. Meanwhile, some inmates are returning voluntarily. One such prisoner, Muhammad Asif-jailed in a theft case-was brought back by his maternal uncle on Wednesday morning. Asif told the media that the jail break occurred following strong earthquake tremors, which caused panic among inmates and damaged a section of the jail wall. With the barrack doors left open, prisoners were able to escape through the main gate.

Reportedly, profiles of all escaped inmates have been compiled, and raids are being conducted at their residences. Jail authorities have stated that inmates returning voluntarily will be treated leniently, while strict action will be taken against those who continue to evade arrest.

Normalcy has returned to Malir Jail, and visitation restrictions have been lifted.
