The Punjab Assembly on Friday unanimously passed a resolution congratulating Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir on his elevation to the rank of Field Marshal, praising his leadership in securing a remarkable success in the recent conflict with India.
The resolution, moved by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Shaukat Raja, commended the armed forces for their strategic excellence and valour.
It stated that General Munir, through his wisdom and military acumen, effectively thwarted every hostile move by India, ultimately securing a decisive victory that reinforced Pakistan's stance on the global stage.
Despite the rare consensus across party lines on the resolution, the Assembly proceedings were overshadowed by criticism from the Opposition, which slammed the government for its visible lack of interest in the session's legislative business, particularly during a general discussion on the province's deteriorating law and order situation.
Opposition Leader Ahmad Khan Bhachar strongly criticised the absence of ministers and officials from the treasury benches, pointing out that only one ruling party MPA was present during the debate, while the official gallery remained entirely empty.
He expressed concern over rising crime, accusing the government of negligence and failing to deliver on its promises to ensure public safety.
"Law and order has collapsed. In just two days, 324 and 370 criminal incidents occurred in Lahore respectively. This proves the seriousness of the situation," he said, citing recent police data.
At one point, Panel of Chairmen Sami Ullah Khan also expressed displeasure over the non-attendance of government officials.
