Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan are opening up about their emotional connection to the original series and their excitement for the upcoming reboot.
In a recent interview with SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up, both actresses reflected on what it was like filming the cult hit and how it shaped their early careers. “It was really like a high school, college experience because it was full on,” Hannigan shared. Gellar added, “I was 17 when we did the pilot, 18 when we started, so I looked to all of them because I was learning.”
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, officially announced in February 2025, has fans buzzing. Notably, Gellar is returning to reprise her iconic role, with director and lifelong fan Chloe Zhao helming the pilot. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman are writing the series, promising a modern take while honoring the original’s legacy.
Gellar emphasized that her hope for the reboot is to bring comfort and connection. “Buffy is still hitting people who are watching it for the first time. They’re seeing themselves, their friends, and their chosen family,” she said. “More than ever right now, we need that.”
Both Gellar and Hannigan reflected on how their roles have come full circle. “We used to play teens and now we have teens,” Hannigan noted, highlighting the generational resonance the show continues to hold.
The reboot aims to reintroduce Buffy to a new generation while staying true to its roots of empowerment, identity, and belonging.
